selfies

wearing: Mom's white blazer (I forget the label), Madewell shirt, H&M cuffs, J. Brand jeans, Zara shoes

Ever wanted to know what happens when I'm free from the judging eyes of the public (or the person behind the camera)? I present to you, self-photographed outfit shots from some random-ass day a long time ago when I raided my mom's closet for the white blazer and ended up channeling Lourdes Leon and Miami Vice at the same time. Sometimes I impress myself.

wearing Madewell denim shirt, Zara pants, GAP sweater borrowed from my mom, J. Crew bag, vintage shoes, boyfriend's sunglasses

I've just closed out a 70 hour work week. I'm exhausted. But that doesn't stop me from reading porn to the blind, taking in strays, giving them a weave, and tattooing eyebrows on them. Look at the good I do.

my mother, the style icon

my mom is on the far right in every picture, except the bottom one of course

Yes, I know these pictures look like they were taken last week with the "Hefe" filter on Instagram, but they were actually all legitimately taken in the 70's. First when my mom was a Kappa at LSU, and later on when she moved to Paris to be an Au Pair for a year. She looks so young (probably about 21-24) but I remember seeing them as a child and thinking she looked like a grownup. It's funny how your perception of your parents changes as you slowly morph into versions of them at different ages. If you compared my college pictures to my mom's, you'd probably be struck by how similar they are--except my outfits were definitely not this cool. Also, I did more drugs.

Anyhoo, the point of this post (besides lamenting the fact that my mom doesn't have that camel peacoat anymore) is that my mom is still beautiful, still has an enviable closet, and still inspires me every day. Basically, she's the best mom ever.

wearing Leith leather leggings from Nordstrom Rack, Tucker blouse, mom's sweater vest, Urban Outfitters shoes, vintage necklace and bracelets, DIY tassel earrings

Thanksgiving outfit, take 2. Decided that elastic waistband buttery soft leather leggings would do less to impede consumption and digestion than my wool trousers in the previous post. It was a wise decision.

These are my first pair of leather leggings and I had to buy them in a medium because the only other size was an xs. Reeeeaaallly hoping they don't stretch out and become leather hammer pants. Does anyone know how much leather leggings tend to stretch?

Besides choking my spleen and at least one kidney, this skirt is alarmingly perfect. Thanks, mom.

wearing vintage embroidered blouse, thrifted Wrangler cut-offs, random thrifted, new jewelry, shoes from Seychelles

Housesitting while my parents are away presents ample opportunity to scan through the contents of my mother's closet, which contains this handmade peasant blouse from the '40s. The peplum waist, carved buttons, and flattering fit is just about convincing me that it needs to come live with me. Shhhh, don't tell.

Outfit post from a couple of weeks ago featuring two very different prints from different ends of the color wheel. And somehow it works. Thank you J. Crew, for continuing to not suck and to supply me with endless styling inspiration.

no one gets sick in july

No one except me, apparently. What began as a seasonal allergy attack has ended in full-fledged stuffyheadachyfeveryuckiness. And that sucks because today was a great day. An amazing singer songwriter named Terra Naomi stopped by our offices for an impromptu performance, I found yet another dress of my sister's to wear, and Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in the chokey. I'm just bummed I don't feel better so I could really absorb the awesomeness of it all.

delusions of grandeur make me feel a lot better about myself

wearing vintage jacket, t-shirt from LF, Forever21 leggings, unknown shoes, vintage necklace

Playing dress-up with clothing left over at my parents' house. The jacket was my mom's in the 70s, the shoes are a New York purchase that turned out to be too big and have now been bequeathed to my sister. If you look closely in the first picture, you can see Kobe's fine snout making a guest appearance (and his fanny making a guest appearance in the third pic). Good golly I love that dog.

And wouldn't you know it, I've been stricken with tuberculosis or something awful and I've been hacking all day. I'm off to bed.

Over the years I have managed to acquire almost all of what survived of my late grandmother's wardrobe, for the sole reason that I'm the only living relative whose pygmy frame can fit into her handmade frocks. But only if I don't eat anything. Olden times people were small.

So, I was delighted to receive a care package in the mail yesterday from my aunt with these new pieces to add to my collection. If you can believe it, everything, with the exception of the lace blouse, was handmade. My grandmother sewed all her own clothes, and the clothes for her six children. I'm pretty sure her handiness with a sewing machine would put 9 out of 10 design students to shame. And I can't even sew a Goddamn pillow! Oh, and I'm totally feeling soft pink and white monochrome outfits right now. Before I even received this in the mail, I was working on these Polyvore collages:

what i wore today

Spent the first half of the day watching The Real World from last night, marveling that I still actually watch that crap show, making oatmeal, cleaning the bathroom, and applying for jobs. Then I realized it was 3:00 and I had yet to set foot outside the house. Hermit-like, I crept into the shower, emerged refreshed, and put this little outfit together that consists of a wool skirt my mom has had since the 70's, a vintage plaid button-down (so S.F. hipster), and my most treasured Topshop Mongolian gilet, a gift for my birthday. Oh, and of course my Terry de Havilland wedges, a sale find from Shopbop sometime last year when I had a job. And money. Those were the days.

And what did I do in this getup? I went with my mom to have tea at a great neighborhood spot called Lovejoy's Tea Room. I have a thing for little cream cheese and cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off. You know, Stuff White People Like. I'm painfully unoriginal.
