calmate guey

Mira! Mexico was a wondrous journey away from my iphone and towards total and utter relaxation. We spent the majority of our time in the picturesque town of Tulum, about two hours south of the Cancun airport. It is, quite literally, a chickens-in--the-road kind of town where they only take cash and time merely plods along as opposed to sweeping your feet out from under you and punching you in the solar plexus. In fact, the only thing I did with any kind of rapidity while there was burn through 900-pages of Shantaram. Here's what it looked like:

Beach combing in a vintage caftan I purchased last time I was in Palm Springs. I'll give you one guess whether I have ever worn it before, and whether I'll ever wear it again... (hint: San Francisco is currently 58 degrees) IMGP4705 IMGP4697

I drove down to San Luis Obispo this weekend to visit one of my oldest friends who just got engaged. In between lots of ring oohhhing and ahhhing and debating the merits of matching vs. slightly different bridesmaids dresses, we also visited the estate they've picked out to get married next year--a charming property dotted with manzanita bushes and mismatched chandeliers hanging from the trees. It was the perfect location to debut this vivid striped skirt I found in a local thrift store a few weeks ago--and an awkward new signature pose. The Captain was here.

In less than one month, I'll be sunning my flesh on the shores of the Mayan Riviera, sipping lethal margaritas by an ocean so warm and deeply azure, I would swear it's straight out of a postcard. I'm staying in Playa Del Carmen and Tulum, where I will partake (with extreme glee) in the following activities:

1. Snorkeling over a shipwreck 60 feet off shore
2. Exploring Mayan ruins
3. Swimming in limestone caverns that used to be places of human sacrifice (!!!)
4. Reading on the beach
5. Eating lobster tacos by the double fistful

And even though, let's be honest, I'll probably resemble a greasy drowned rat while schlopping through the humidity, let's suspend our disbelief for a second and pretend that I'm endowed with enough disposable income to have the outfits above on my packing list. Surely, if water that blue exists, it's possible for me to look decent in 4,000% humidity. Surely?

life, generally

My summer so far has been defined by frequent trips into Marin to avoid the fog, more online shopping than shopping at actual stores, Wardell's growing afro that elicits comments almost wherever we go, hanging with Kobe, finding sunny spots to read, a constant smell of self tanner hanging around my apartment, planning a trip to Tulum and Playa Del Carmen in July, and vowing not to spend any more money now that said travel has been planned and paid for. Restraint is key.

eclipse shadows

I'm ridiculously impressed with the fit of this H&M dress. Sometimes all you need is a little fit + flare action to elevate your mood.

UPDATE: My friend Stacy pointed out that those crescent shaped bright reflections on the side of the house are from the eclipse. I can't believe I didn't realize that. Sometimes I'm dumber than a Kardashian.

bared

wearing vintage skirt, madewell denim shirt, no-name sunglasses, earrings from Morocco, vintage and thrifted jewelry, and Derek Lam shoes

Hangin' on street corners with Kobes the other weekend, enjoying a brief stint of warm weather, which has now of course been replaced with typical "summer" weather in SF--blisteringly cold and windy with thick fog that only dissipates sometime around midday and then comes roaring back in the early evening. Kind of like this

Don't know if you can tell, but I flirted, ever so briefly, with the idea of a crop top and high waisted skirt with this outfit. I think I've decided that one can avoid unpleasant mid-90's references as long as the belly button is covered. What say you?

wearing Lorick Dress from Gilt Groupe, Banana Republic belt, La Rok sweater, random heels from shop in NY

Yes my friends, summer has come. Today it was a toasty 85 degrees in the city, and the rest of the week is looking like it's going to remain quite warm. I'm ecstatic. What is it about waking up to sunshine that immediately makes you less reluctant to start your day?

As I sit here typing its still at least 78 degrees. Praise the lord.

ps
I'm throwing shade in the first shot to a neighbor who was yelling at a woman collecting recycling out of people's trash bins. He was trying to shoo her away like a dog. WTF? Was HE going to go through the trash for people's bottles? No? Then for God's sake, STFU.

I finally got some sun on my cankles this weekend which gave me an opportunity to wear the Gilt Groupe Lorick dress out of the house for the first time. Short dress + clogs + socks = SO HOT RIGHT NOW. I am also unexpectedly finding that this vintage woven belt makes every outfit better. It's the ketchup of the clothing world.

Special thanks to Rachel from VisualBasic for featuring my likeness in her Blogger Sketch Sunday series! Rach is the real deal--a talented artist, creative thinker, and all around badass chick whose sketches constantly make me wish I had stuck with drawing. Not that I would have turned out half as good as she is, but y'know, I could at least be trying instead of sitting here watching Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch.

Here are Rachel's drawings and the original photos side by side for comparison! Clearly cartoon me is way hotter than real me.

Wearing hand-me-down shirt from Urban Outfitters, Gap jeans, sister's necklace, Ray Ban sunglasses

It's still cold as balls in SF and I can't be bothered to bear an inch of skin. I'm dreaming of warm beaches, cold beer, and endless days punctuated by heavy drinking (don't judge). Why does summer have to end before it even started? I haven't even worn my tie dye shorts yet from J. Crew!!!

These pictures were taken over the weekend at my parent's house in (marginally sunnier) Marin. My sister gave me the t-shirt just before skipping town, and although I usually don't wear printed t-shirts, I took a shine to the watercolor print. Also, I stole her necklace. Thhhhanks Rachel.

got my greatest hits

Summery temperatures didn't stop me from being chained to a laptop all weekend, so I just brought the laptop outside into the lush, tropical landscape that is my boyfriend's unkempt backyard. As an added bonus, it abuts a golf course so not only am I being watched by creepy golfers, I'm also in constant danger of being wiped out of existence by a rogue golf ball. I mean, with a setup like this, who needs vacation?!

This was the kind of weekend where all I wanted to do was drive around with the windows down blasting Sublime. It's going to be a little hard getting jazzed up about going back to work.

stay cool

Photobucket

San Franciscans are sadly ill-equipped to handle temparature surges of more than 78 degrees. A late summer heat-wave ultimately leads to a lot of complaining and a convenient excuse to cancel all your plans and lounge in a state of semi-undress while eating ice pops.

On to important matters. I am determined to buy a pair of thigh-high boots for fall, and I've found a couple of promising options on Bebe and Topshop's website. The Topshop boots are available in a 38.5, which is apparently equivalent to a UK 6. I normally wear a US size 8, so these could either be perfect or a bit too big. Does anyone know how they run??

The pair on Bebe's website would be my second choice because they have a higher heel and they're not real leather, but they actually look pretty similar. Everyone, please do your civic duty and vote.
