So I finally made it to the De Young Museum yesterday to check out the Yves Saint Laurent exhibit. It should come as no surprise that the collection, besides being incredibly comprehensive (120+ fully accessorized outfits!) contained some of the most mind-blowingly spectacular couture you could ever hope to be in the same room with. What really struck me was the timelessness of the designs. There were evening dresses from 1962 that would be right at home on the red carpet in 2009, pantsuits that looked like they could have come from the Pre-Fall '09 lookbooks, and of course, the Le Smoking, which looks just as cool and nonchalant now as it did when it was first created in 1966. Astonishing really, that YSL managed to be both so totally ahead of his time and create clothes that were so infinitely wearable.

That exhibit was the best! Not just the fabrics and cut of the clothes but every last detail from hats to jewelry to gloves--everything was perfect. And what about the gorgeous beading and embroidery? That handiwork probably ruined the eyesight of more than a few seamstresses. But, oh so lovely.

ReplyDeleteI agree. My mother-in-law own a complete collection book of YSL and so many of his old collection is straight out copied by other designers now..like that whole feather skirt look. He is a genius.
