So...after much hand-wringing and multiple attempts at creating the perfect tie-dye effect, here are my DIY bleached jeans. Overall, I'm happy with the way they turned out. As far as the overt-90s-ness of them, I'm hoping they're a little less "Brenda Walsh called, she wants her jeans back" and a little more "Erin-Wasson-Reinvents-90210-Chic." However, the process actually turned out to be a lot slower than I had anticipated because I never was able to find thicker bleach. Even when I applied the household bleach directly, it took over an hour for the fabric to lighten up. In addition, the bleach smell took about 3 separate washes to fully dissipate. I tried putting them on after one washing and I swear to God, my eyes were watering from the bleach fumes. You could smell me from about a mile away.
I still think they need a generous sprinkling of holes and maybe one more bleach session to really get all the color out of some patches. Then maybe they'll look as cool as these:
I love those bleached jeans--that's so fabulous that you did them yourself. The blazer and boots with the whole look really make it complete :-)

If I may give you one tip perhaps you have already tried this but after I bleach (hand rinse as much as you can but leave as much as you can to tolerate the smell) I air dry it at a sunny part of the house...the whites get extra white from it. When it completely dry I throw it in the wash.
